The Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government collaborated with the ILO Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean in conducting a webinar titled “Sensitization Workshop on ILO Reporting.” This webinar was scheduled following a request from the Government of Belize for technical assistance and training for its officials to meet the obligations under ratified instruments.

Thirty representatives from Government ministries and agencies, civil society organizations and workers’ and employers’ organizations in Belize participated in a virtual capacity-building workshop on ILO Reporting of international labour standards. Amongst the representatives were Mr. Valentino Shal, CEO, Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government who delivered the opening remarks. Remarks were also delivered by Ms. Marissa Longsworth, President, Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and Mr. Luis Luke Martinez, President, National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB).

The workshop aimed to support Belize in fulfilling its annual obligation to report on ratified ILO Conventions. It was facilitated by Ms. Erica Martin, ILO Specialist, Labour Law and International Labour Standards and Ms. Claire Lamb, Deputy Labour Commissioner, Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government, Belize.

The ILO supervisory system monitors the implementation of ILO Conventions in law and in practice, based on the reports sent by Governments and observations from the social partners. The workshop focused on the inputs of a wide range of Government entities whose contributions ensure that reports sent to the ILO are comprehensive and up to date. These inputs contribute to a full picture of the national application of standards in practice. The workshop also explored the crucial role of the social partners in reporting and standards supervision.
