Belize Mayors' Association
There are seven (7) towns and two (2) cities that operate at the sub-national level in the government system of Belize. These towns and cities are headed by an elected Mayor who is regarded as the Accounting Officer of the city or town council.
Sustainable & Child Friendly Municipalities Initiative
In June 2014, the Government of Belize and the United Nations System made a commitment to support the strengthening of local government capacity in Belize through the establishment of Sustainable and Child Friendly Municipalities.

A permit is required for the construction and/or demolition of any structure within the municipal space; this include but is not limited to the construction and/demolition of residential and commercial spaces; fences, docks and other premises used for occupation.
A trade license is needed to conduct any sale of goods or services within a city or town. A liquor license is needed for the sale of liquor within the municipality or rural space.
The main taxes and fees that are applicable include but are not limited to the following: Property Evaluation Fees (Property Tax); Trade License Fees, Liquor License Fees, Building Construction Fees (Building Permit Fees), Market Rental Fees.
